Composition
Chen Su-ti wrote it at Tamsui high School, with the date of November 28, 1927, and this should be Chen’s earliest writing remained.
《臺灣素描》1939年創作，題獻給恩師德明利，為臺灣第一套鋼琴組曲。
The suite was composed in 1939. Chen Su-ti dedicated this work to his teacher Ms. Isabel Taylor. Taiwan Sketches is the first piano suite composed by Taiwanese composer.

西樂有系統的傳入臺灣有兩條發展軸線，一為日本人1895年殖民臺灣後，在學校體系帶入西式音樂教育。二為十九世紀末歐美基督教會的亞洲宣教行動，「唱聖詩」不僅常成為傳福音的最重要活動，更因傳教士在各地所設立的教會和神學院唱詩之傳統，而使西洋的聖詩成為西樂傳入臺灣的先導。
陳泗治1911年出生於臺北士林三角埔，父親陳應麟為清朝秀才，家學淵源。少年時期因緣際會進入淡水中學就讀，開啟他一生與音樂的不解之緣：鋼琴是他的最愛，創作是他無法割捨的情人，大約二十首的聖樂合唱曲與鋼琴作品，成為臺灣當代創作的先驅。
陳泗治1992年過世於美國加州，今年適逢其逝世三十周年，此意義深遠的紀念特展為凸顯他一生的多重身分：身為教育家，受教於西方傳教師，回饋母校淡江中學擔任校長長達25年，以音樂與體育治校，影響眾多學生；身為鋼琴家與作曲家，以演出實務豐富其西方浪漫手法結合五聲音階的技法，開創臺灣第一代作曲家的新風格。1936年的《上帝的羔羊》為臺灣第一首聖樂合唱曲，1939年的《台灣素描》為臺灣第一套鋼琴組曲，皆寫下紀錄；身為牧師，一生謙遜、低調，以基督信仰為生命歷程之中心思想。陳泗治是一位結合信仰與音樂的勇者，「音樂哲人」典範永存。
Prologue
Two historical axes systematically introduced western music to Taiwan. First, after Japan colonized Taiwan in 1895, it implemented a western music curriculum in schools. Second, hymn-singing became an important way to spread the word of God and through it western music was further solidified. Chen Su-ti, having grown up in this confluence, forged an inevitable link with this music. His more than 20 choral and piano compositions continue to occupy an important place in Taiwan’s music history.
2022 is the 30th anniversary of his death. This exhibition celebrates his many faceted life. As an educator, he was profoundly influenced by western missionaries. As a pianist, he accompanied many Taiwanese musicians and led many worship services. As a composer, he skillfully wove the pentatonic scale into typical western compositional structure, resulting in music that sounded familiar but also uniquely Taiwanese. As a minister and pastor, he was a humble servant with an unshakable faith in God and an unwavering love for Christ our Lord. In him, the model of Philosopher of Music lives on.
